In May 2014, Ed Miliband, then leader of the British Labour Party, was photographed eating a bacon sandwich awkwardly while campaigning. The image became an Internet meme, and has been referred to by British media when other campaigning politicians are pictured eating meat sandwiches. While some saw the photograph as evidence that Miliband was out of touch with the British public, others perceived it as part of a campaign against him. He reacted to the photograph by saying that "If you want a politician who thinks that a good photo is the most important thing, then don't vote for me".〔

On a campaign tour in May 2014 ahead of local and European elections, Miliband went to a café in London's New Covent Garden Market as part of a pledge to help owners of small businesses. His bacon sandwich began to leak grease, and after a few bites he stopped eating it and gave it to Shadow Cabinet member Lord Wood of Anfield. The photographs were taken by the ''Evening Standard''s Jeremy Selwyn, who said it was unplanned and that all politicians are "fair game" despite their press officers' strict controls on photography.
